What makes this boat special for us

While we cut our teeth sailing dinghies and monohulls on the San Francisco Bay, we decided that a catamaran is what we wanted to cruise aboard full-time based on its redundancy and solar capacity. Sailboat design are a series of trade-off. We prioritized on protected helm, single handed sailing, build quality, and off-grid autonomy; over a versatile sail plan, helm visibility, and interior finishes.

Protected helm for single-handing

After several offshore passage on catamarans with either exposed outboard helm, or an elevated sport helm, we realized we wanted a helm that's located low and mid-ship. Aboard the cockpit of the 1370, a single crew can trim and reef the jib and the mainsail from the protected bulkhead mounted helm. The trade-off is the reduced helm visibility which we will augment with mast-mounted low-light and thermal imaging cameras.

Construction method

The hull is vacuum infused vinyl ester resin on closed-cell PVC foam core using hybrid e-glass and carbon fiber. The carbon fiber bulkhead is tabbed and glassed onto the hulls. The furniture modules are built separately and then bonded and glassed to the hulls. This results in a generally stiffer and more rigid build with lower displacement, as compared to comparably priced production catamaran. The trade-off is a relatively spartan interior.

The boat is equipped a 16kWh lithium bank charged with 2.3kW solar on a large coachroof with built-in rain-catchment system. A pair of 4.0kW alternators will top off the battery as a backup. A 40GPH DC watermaker with will supply additional freshwater. An all-electric galley is paired with an outdoor gas bbq for cooking. All systems are chosen for extended cruising with backup systems for redundancy.
